Gardening as it ought to be

A flower with 50s fins
Aquilegia is one of the plants that has made its home in my undesigned garden. I popped in a few varieties years ago and they have stayed. But interbreeding seems to have drained them of colour so that most of the plants that pop up where they will are now white.

So, to bring some variety back, we planted a packet of Aqulegia Canadensis seed a couple of years ago.

These have amazing flowers, a cross between the fins and lights on a 50s Cadillac and Dan Dare’s space craft. The petals are yellow, and they carry a floral afterburner of four red, trailing, tubular tail fins.

In year one we had a dozen, in year two we were down to a couple but, this year, they have really multiplied. They are noding their heads all along the shady border. So let’s hope Canadensis is here to stay.
